No Woman, No Cry has been covered several times by artistes including Jimmy Cliff, Tems, Nina Simone, Jimmy Cliff, The Fugees, Boney M, Hugh Masekela, Ken Boothe, and PM Dawn, according to WhoSampled.
Written by Marley and his friend Vincent “Tata” Ford, the song was first released on October 25, 1974, on the Natty Dread album. In April this year, No Woman, No Cry became the fifth Bob Marley & The Wailers single to be certified platinum in the UK.
While walking the red carpet, the ShenYeng princess also told the thoroplatedmediachannel that she sprinkled a little “shenyeng seasoning” to add flavour.
“But I didn’t change it up too much, I wanted to keep it real iconic and real original,” she said.
Asked if she were nervous about covering such a powerful song, she said:”I was not, I was having fun…I feel like if I got the opportunity to do so, I should make it my own, it’s already mine, there is nothing to be nervous about.”
Shenseea was also featured on the soundtrack for ‘The Color Purple,’ the 2023 musical drama starring Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, and more.
Shenseea is the featured artiste on ‘Hell No! (Reprise) [Missy Elliott remix],’ with American Idol winner Fantasia Barrino, who also acts in the film.
The song samples Dawn Penn‘s Dancehall version of You Don’t Love Me (No, No, No), released in 1993. It was produced by Stephen Bray and Nick Baxter.
She signed with Interscope Records in 2019 and released the song “Blessed,” which featured Tyga and obtained over 58 million YouTube views.
Shenseea was featured on the Kanye West album “Donda” in 2021, and she was nominated for “Album of the Year” for her collaboration on the album at the 64th Grammy Awards ceremony. In 2021, she won “Best Reggae Act at the MOBO Awards, and in 2022, released her single, “Lick,” featuring Megan Thee Stallion, from the album “Alpha.”
