Two brothers are now in custody after allegedly attempting to rob a 72-year-old businessman in St Mary on Tuesday.
The police report that around 3:00 pm, the elderly businessman, who is a licensed firearm holder, returned home after doing business at the National Commercial Bank (NCB) in Port Maria earlier in the day.
He then drove to Highgate and then to his house. Upon exiting his vehicle he observed two (2) men running towards him and calling out to him .
He called out to his wife to close all the doors as he ran inside.
The two men, 28-year-old Evan Edwards and his 39-year-old brother Alwayne, from Islington, allegedly started pounding on the door.
The fact that he didn’t know these men he ran up the staircase to the upper floor of his house and told his wife to shut the door. His wife Marline Douglas shut the door and the men began to kick the door. Douglas who is a Licence firearm holder pulled his pistol (particulars not yet ascertained) and discharged two (2) rounds in the air through a window and the men ran.
While they made their escape, the Edwards brothers then allegedly opened fire at a retired cop. The former cop returned fire, hitting the older sibling -Alwayne- while the younger one fled the scene.
The former cop is Kenneth Burey, businessman and Ex District Constable of Belfield St Mary who operate a business at Lewistore square. He was outside his shop when he heard several explosions sounding like gunshot.
He returned to the scene later and was pointed out to the police as the one who ran .He is Evan Edwards 28 yrs old D.O.B 31/1995 painter of White Hall District Islington St Mary. The injured gunman identified himself as Alwayne Edwards o/c Bullu 39 years old, a mason of Sports Road, Islington. Both are said to be brothers.
A 9-millimetre weapon was allegedly retrieved from the scene of the incident.
The injured gunman was taken to a medical facility where he is being treated.
The Highgate police are investigating.
