Publicist Ralston Barrett wrote a scathing post about Protoje on Facebook, challenging his account of how he earned his first Onstage interview when he was still a little known artiste in the reggae industry. Barrett played an integral role in Protoje's development, marshalling his public relations push, securing rotation for the artiste and approaching several promoters to jumpstart his career. However, once Protoje hit the big times, he abruptly discontinued his work with Mr. Barrett.

"Protoje is such a liar just heard him tell Winford how earned his first interview on Onstage. It was I who arranged that interview.

I hate how some of these artistes like to pretend like they did it all on their own.

I was bedridden for more than a year when I helped to take him from obscurity to popularity. And I've never heard him credit me for the work I did to introduce him to public.

I could write a book about this experience.
