Songwriters hold a special place in society because they inspire and influence millions of people with their lyrics which create a new platform for others to experience the world.

One of Jamaica’s top notch songwriters is Patrick “Black Pearl” Howell whose uncanny ear for music and songwriting savvy have made him a favourite of artistes working on major music projects.

From a tender age of 15, Black Pearl often dreamed of working in the music industry.

Growing up, his parents and siblings often saw him listening to music and writing new lyrics as he went about his daily life.

“One of my favorite past times was to rewrite the lyrics of popular artists with my own creative blend,” he said.

He landed his first job at Aquarius Record shop where he spent five years learning how to enhance his writing skills. From the experience gained at Aquarius, he attained another position at the Black Scorpio Recording Studio where he gained the skills of a recording engineer.

He spent five years at Black Scorpio and finally he decided to move on again when he landed a job at King Jammys Recording Studio. It was here that he began to interact with popular entertainers, while he sharpened his skills in the recording engineer field.

In a few short years, he has matured into one of the best songwriters Jamaica has ever produced, commanding a high level of respect and credibility throughout the entertainment fraternity.

He has written songs for entertainers such as Elephant Man, Bounty Killer, George Nooks, Luciano, Wayne Wonder, Chuck Fender, and Anthony Cruz, among others. Standout songs which have gained international recognition include ‘Place Too Bloody’ by Buju Banton and Anthony Cruz, “Turn it up” by Anthony Cruz, “Nuff Neva Hungry” by Chuck Fenda, “Taking You Home” by Romaine Virgo, “True Blessing” by Toya, and “Spank Dem” by Harry Toddler. Recently, he arranged the ensemble hit, 'When We Roll' that features the Force, that is Harry Toddler, Toya, G Warren, Lolly, and Motion.

He is presently employed to Down Sound Records Studio where he is currently writing and producing hits. Black Pearl’s artistic vision and aspiration is to be regarded as one of the best in his chosen field.

“I have never thought about giving up, no matter how things seem rough at times…my hard work and dedication finally paid off when I got a job at Down Sound,” he said.

Black Pearl is very confident that his new job will give him the opportunity to show the world just what he can do.

“We’re going to change the world through music,” he said.
