The annual Youth View Awards, held at the National Indoor Sports Centre, was really a night to remember with great performances, pomp and pageantry. However, there was a notable absence of true star power as most of the big names stayed away.

It was an occasion for regular folk to walk the red carpet and they strutted their formal wear under the stutter flashes of numerous cameras. International teen pop star Pia Mia strutted the carpet in her white and black outfit along with her back up dancers while socializing with some of our locals. The event got off to a bit of a tardy start as there  was a 10 minute wait until the show officially started. The master of ceremonies apologized for the delay and the night started with an energetic, delightfully choreographed dance using elements of classic and modern dancehall music which was done by the event's dance group. The dancers set the tone for the event and amped up the excitement for a big night for dancehall and reggae.

ZJ Bambino and comedienne Bella Blair were the main presenters and they did their best to carry the show but unfortunately, only one artiste showed up to collect his award. Perhaps the organisers need to revisit their approach to drum up support from the local dancehall and reggae fraternity.

The impish and wonderfully creative Tanto Blacks came on stage with his trademark slang "Reeaallll Rich" which caused an uproar in the crowd, which was not matched for the rest of the night. Many patrons agreed later that he was the highlight of the show "apart from the free KFC in the VIP" (did I just make a cool rhyme?).

The incarcerated Vybz Kartel got the award for best dancehall artist of the year which was no surprise given his iconic status and steady stream of dancehall hits. However, at least he had a valid excuse for not attending and his son accepted the award on his behalf. Even though the 'Teacha' won Favourite Artiste Male Local and Favourite Dancehall Artiste, while his heir apparent Alkaline won the Hot and Hype Artist of the year and the organisers secured the services of  a look-alike to 'trick' and perhaps amuse the crowd to go onstage and accept the award.

Although he was not present to collect his trophies, ZJ Chrome secured wins in three categories: Favourite Producer, Favourite Party Selector, and Favourite Radio DJ. Ishawna was a multiple winner, taking the Young Hot & Hype Female category as well as the Favourite Fashion Icon Female. At least she was present to collect her award.

All in all, it was a fine event, and I was able to schmooze and take selfies with social media stars like Prince Pine, Quite Perry and Bella Blair.
