Defence attorneys for Vybz Kartel and his co-accused are intimating that it is possible that Vybz Kartel's phone could have been cloned, and the trove of incriminating text messages could have been sent by someone else.

Last week, attorney Michael Lorne questioned the Digicel rep, Mario Assad, asking if it were possible for a mobile phone's unique identification number to be hacked and for a phone call to be placed or a message sent from a cloned mobile phone. This would make it appear as if the original owner of the phone number was placing the call or sending the message.
The possibility of cloning means that Assad was unable to definitively say if messages reportedly recovered from Digicel's system were actually sent from the original devices which the police confiscated from Vybz Kartel and his co-accused. However, if the phones were cloned? By whom were they cloned? It would have to be a sophisticated hi-tech plot, and why would someone devote so much resources to frame Vybz Kartel?
Assad also said that the Digicel system was in proper working order at the time information regarding phone numbers reportedly assigned to the murder accused were recovered.
