The Spanish Town Hospital has been adversely affected by the recent period of heavy rainfall, stressing the capabilities of the already beleaguered institution. With the island on the edge of the rainy season, hospital officials are already wringing their hands in dismay.
Deputy Director of Services Candice Thompson ,while speaking at the Disaster Planning, Management and Safety Committee meeting at the St. Catherine Parish  Council, outlined that the Accident and Emergency Unit was a disaster whenever it rains.

"Any period of heavy rainfall leads to the A&E being flooded out. A gutter was built but the problem still exists. With the impending rainy season ahead we at the hospital are in fear of what will happen when such a disaster occurs. Also another great concern is that with the constant rainfall the roof of the unit is infested with termites," Ms. Thompson said.

She also addressed the vexing issue of the morgue, a pressing concern if the island were to experience a major disaster.

"We are aware that the hospital cannot accommodate all the traffic because of the limited space but we are coping. The issus is that the morgue has been out of service for many years and so that service has to be contracted privately and if a major disaster should occur then we would have to find a section of the A&E to store the bodies until they can be removed," Thompson said.

The news team was unsuccessful in receiving a response from the acting chief executive officer who said that his tenure would be complete within two days and it would be best to seek answers from SERHA.

However when Loop News spoke to  the public relations officer at the Ministry of Health, the reporter was told that the officer would return the call. However up to press time, no call nor information was forthcoming.
