Will Kartel get lost in the slow-working Jamaican justice system?
Presently, there are 593 cases for trial this term, of which 558 were traversed from the previous term. There are 344 murder cases and 152 sexual offence cases. The court is being hampered by inadequate preparation of cases and there is a need for cases to be disposed of expeditiously. Some experts have posited that a timeline must be set for disclosures of documents at the case management conference. Will judges step up to play an important role in driving the case management conference forward to make delivery of justice a priority to the people of Jamaica? Vybz Kartel has experienced first hand the long delays in getting ballistics reports and medical certificates are two of the major problems the courts face. Is he doomed to spend another year behind bars before he can even get a sliver of justice???
