Even though changes have been recommended by the Cabinet to be made to the Dangerous Drugs Act to allow Jamaica to cash in on the economic benefits of medical marijuana and industrial hemp, there has been a rash of cases of young men being charged with possession of the ganja.

This trend has shown up in the glut of cases on a daily basis at the Spanish Town Resident Magistrates' Court with regards to the charge of possession of and dealing in ganja. The first session of court on Tuesday, January 20, 2015 saw over ten young men ranging from 16 to 21 years being charged. The fines ranges from $100 or 10 days for less than an ounce and $300 or 10 days for three ounces. \
