COP ACQUITTED OF MURDER OF PREGNANT WOMAN

Jamaicans reacted in disbelief yesterday when it emerged that the policeman who was on trial for the murder of a pregnant woman in Yallahs, St Thomas, in 2012, was acquitted in the Home Circuit Court.

 

Corporal Dwayne Smart, who was had been on trial for the last four weeks, was acquitted of murder, manslaughter and wounding with intent after a three-hour deliberation by a seven-member jury.

 

Smart was arrested and charged in 2012 for the death of 25-year-old Kayan Lamont, who was eight months pregnant at the time of the incident. Thomas was allegedly shot twice after she had been accosted for using indecent language. Her sister was also shot and injured during the incident.

 

Smart, was represented by Attorney Valerie Neita Robertson and Kymberli Whittaker.
