Speculation is rampant as to why a  29-year-old pastor was shot and killed by a gunman at a church on Old Harbour Road in St Catherine on Thursday evening.

The deceased has been identified as James Johnson, a member of the Church of God of Prophecy, located at 41 Old Harbour Road in St Catherine.

Reports from the Corporate Communication Unit (CCU) are that at about 5:00 p.m., Johnson was teaching a class with students at the church when a lone gunman entered the building and opened fire, hitting the pastor.

The man then fled the area. Johnson was rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Social media users reacted with shock to the murder.

"Grace Worship Centre COGOP Family extends deepest condolence to the family of Minister/Pastor James Johnson and the entire Church of God of Prophecy Family in Jamaica," another social media post stated.

Others speculated about the sexual orientation of the pastor.

"This pastor was an effeminate man, no one deserves to die that way, but I will reserve my comment until after more investigation is done as to why he was killed," one social media user said.

Another asked: "where is the reverential fear in Jamaica? All in the church dem a kill people? I remember some years ago, some gunmen chased a man into a church and killed him, but for them to kill a pastor while teaching

bible studies in a church is UNHEARD OF...I feel sorry for my little island."

The Spanish Town police are investigating the incident.
