Yet another 'man of the cloth' suffered a dizzying fall from grace this week as Moravian pastor Rupert Clarke pleaded guilty to two counts of having sex with someone under the age of 16 years old in the St Elizabeth Parish Court on Wednesday.

After entering the guilty plea, Clarke's bail was extended to March 8, when he will be sentenced.

Reverend Clarke, 64, was arrested on December 28 last year by the police in St Elizabeth after he was allegedly seen in a compromising position with a 15-year-old girl in his car along the Austin main road in the parish.

After being charged with offences relating to that alleged incident, charges of a similar nature were laid against him in relation to another member of the family of the 15-year-old.

The case triggered a sex scandal at the Moravian church in Jamaica which mushroomed as other lurid allegations of sex with minors being brought against more pastors and officials. In the wake of his court appearance, there was a call for the principal of Hampton School to resign by KSAC Councillor Kari Douglas, after Heather Murray was present for the bail hearing of Rev Clarke, and attempted , at one stage, to block The Gleaner‘s photographer from taking a photograph of the Moravian minister.

Dr Canute Thompson waded into the controversy when he produced emails dating back to 2014 which prove that leadership of the Moravian Church, including Dr Paul Gardner, was aware of the allegations against Clarke. Thompson said he was “constrained to release the private email with the church president because he was left uncomfortable following Gardner’s denial on Friday that there were previous adverse reports against Clarke”.

Dr Paul Gardner, a former president of the Moravian church, later resigned as chairman of the Teacher Services Commission (TSC).
