The mother and stepfather of 3-year-old Nevalesia Campbell who was killed in St Ann last week, have been receiving death threats in the community, presumably by angry residents upset over the girl's death. They were refused bail in court yesterday.
Mahalia Poyser, a 24-year-old bartender and her common law husband, 30-year-old Roy Downs, were denied bail when they appeared before the St. Ann Parish Court Thursday afternoon.

The two were charged on Monday with breaches of the Child Care and Protection Act.

During the hearing, the Crown did not oppose the bail application by attorney Peter McHugh, representing the couple.

However, concerns were expressed about the safety of Ms Poyser and her boyfriend who have been receiving death threats.

Parish judge Andrea Thomas decided to remand them until July 29.

Ms Poyser was charged after she gave a false statement to the police.

She initially told police that Nevalesia had been put to bed, and was later discovered missing.

Investigators say the adults left Nevalesia and another child unsupervised to attend a dance in the community.

The mother discovered the child missing after returning from the party.

Nevalesia was found dead with chop wounds a few hours later.
