A  detective constable, who was shot dead at a party in St Ann on Sunday night, had an earlier dispute with his accused shooter before Sunday's deadly altercation.

The policeman, identified as Shane Francis, was leaving a party in the White River section of Ocho Rios when he had an altercation with the accused, believed to be a licensed firearm holder.

Both men had a prior dispute before Sunday's incident.

Reports are that, during the standoff, weapons were drawn and explosions were heard a few minutes later.

Francis was found laying on the ground with two gunshot wounds - one to the left side of the chest and the other to his right hip.
