A Spanish Town businessman was murdered, presumably at the hands of gun-toting extortionists yesterday morning.

The man, Oma Johnson, otherwise called 'Ape', operated a 24 hour shop in Thompson Pen. Police reports suggest that a customer came to purchase an item and did not get a response from Johnson, who was eventually discovered dead. His throat had been slashed and he had been shot several times. Robbery is believed to be the motive.

Members of the community were shocked by his death. Councillor Keisha Lewis of the Lauriston and Thompson Pen division, described the slain shopkeeper as a "long standing community member who will be truly missed".

"He was a constant refuge for persons in regards of getting their grocery and snacks. He was very instrumental in keeping the small business alive, working from morning to morning. Ape was very humble, kind, hardworking and dedicated. He will truly be missed. Quiet, resilient and a strong family man with his wife and daughters. The division will miss him especially those that ply that route especially late at nights and could depend on him being open to purchase any last minute items," she said.
