More than 200 Jamaicans, headed by celebrated actor and musician, Harold George Bellanfanti Jr, more popularly called Harry Belafonte, were bestowed with national honours on Monday, which is being observed as National Heroes Day.

Belafonte, 91, will be bestowed with the Order of Merit, the country’s fourth highest award. He is being recognised for his outstanding contribution to the field of music. He was born in Harlem, New York but was always conscious of his roots in Jamaica, where he spent part of his childhood. Among his most popular songs which pay tribute to the island is Jamaica Farewell and the Banana Boat Song (Day-O).
