The police have advised that all schools in the Corporate Area are now closed due to the heavy smoke emanating from the Riverton City Landfill in St Andrew.

Parents are being asked to pick up their children from school.

Meanwhile, the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) says it is maintaining its ‘morning peak’ service in order to transport school children who have been sent back home because of the unsafe situation presented by the smoke.

The JUTC buses will transport students from school free of cost, according to a release from the police’s Corporate Communications Unit.

The JUTC and the police also encouraged drivers and all other road users to exercise extreme caution when moving around in the condition of the poor visibility which has resulted from the fire at the landfill.
